Nyankunton is a Wellingborough based not for profit organisation which has as its aim the use of West African music as an introduction to World Music. The work of Nyankunton has led to a series of partnerships with local and regional education and community groups.

Based on African drumming rhythmic patterns, our work with schools has shown that not only does involvement with drumming broaden students’ understanding of world music but also provides immediately transferable ways of thinking about numbers and patterns generally and increases the students’ ability to concentrate and to work co-operatively.

The programmes offered by Nyankunton have also been used in therapeutic settings ranging from those with physical disabilities or impairments to those with behavioural difficulties or stress issues. The programmes are suitable for groups of ten to twenty-five participants.

Nyankunton also offers tutoring in black history and culture as a way of learning from the past to make the most of today and for the future.

The main aim of the organisation is to provide young people of all backgrounds the opportunity to experience other cultures, which goes a long way to enhance understanding and social cohesion.
